Rebuilding Patient Trust
Setup
Almost two-thirds of Americans don’t trust the medical system, according to a recent Gallup poll. The United States also ranked toward the bottom among survey respondents who agreed that “all things considered, doctors [in your country] can be trusted.” Rapid shifts in scientific knowledge, surprise billing, and broader suspicion of societal institutions have eroded consumer confidence, undermining a relationship that has long been considered the keystone of good health care. Loss of trust can damage the ability of clinicians and patients to have reasoned and productive conversations and reduce compliance with treatment recommendations. What will it take to restore faith in medicine and those who provide it?
