Abhilasha Karkey

Medical Microbiologist; Vice Director, Oxford University Clinical Research Unit, Nepal

Abhilasha Karkey is a medical microbiologist and vice director of the Oxford University Clinical Research Unit in Nepal, where she studies methods to control the rise and spread of antimicrobial resistance within resource-limited settings. She previously worked with Médecins Sans Frontières in conflict situations in Asia and Africa, including in Liberia, South Sudan, and Uganda. Karkey started her research career studying enteric fever in Kathmandu, the major cause of febrile illnesses in Nepal. For her work on the epidemiology and evolution of enteric fever at University of Oxford, she was awarded the Nuffield Department of Medicine’s graduate prize for outstanding contribution in public health. She is a 2018 Aspen New Voices Fellow.
