Charles and Elizabeth Prothro Professor in Marine Sciences and Senior Fellow, Woods Institute for the Environment, Stanford University

Barbara Block is the Prothro Professor in Marine Sciences at Stanford University and co-founder, with the Monterey Bay Aquarium, of the Tuna Research and Conservation Center. She researches how large pelagic fish (tunas, sharks, and billfish) utilize the ocean and has pioneered electronic tags to track where they go in the oceans. Block was previously a professor at University of Chicago. She has published 220 peer-reviewed papers and edited two volumes on tunas. Her honors include the NSF Young Investigator Award, a MacArthur Fellowship, a Pew Conservation Fellowship, and the Benchley Prize for Ocean Science. Block founded the Tag-A-Giant Fund in 2006 to elevate the science and conservation initiatives for bluefin tuna.
