Marin Alsop is a conductor, the first woman to head a major orchestra in several countries. She is chief conductor of the ORF Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra, first music director of the University of Maryland National Orchestral Institute + Festival, conductor of honor of São Paulo Symphony Orchestra, chief conductor and curator of Chicago’s Ravinia Festival, and the Aspen Institute’s 2021/2022 Harman/Eisner Artist in Residence. Previously, Alsop served 14 years as music director of the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, where she founded the OrchKids program and continues in some leadership roles. She founded the Taki Alsop Conducting Fellowship, which nurtures the careers of fellow female conductors, and received a MacArthur Fellowship, the only conductor to do so.
