Stephen L. Carter is the William Nelson Cromwell Professor of Law at Yale University, where he has taught since 1982. His course matter includes contracts, evidence, law and religion, and the ethics of war. Carter is the author of 14 books, including The Violence of Peace: America’s Wars in the Age of Obama; God’s Name in Vain: The Wrongs and Rights of Religion in Politics; and Civility: Manners, Morals, and the Etiquette of Democracy. His six novels include The Emperor of Ocean Park and, most recently, Back Channel. He also writes regularly for Bloomberg View. Carter moderated seminars at the Aspen Institute for nearly 20 years.
