Walter Ochieng

Surgeon and Public Health Economist, Center for Global Health, US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention

Walter Ochieng is a surgeon and public health economist who works with the CDC’s Center for Global Health. Having worked in government, humanitarian, and nonprofit health services in several African countries, he spearheaded a program in Kenya to promote circumcision as a tool to fight the spread of HIV. Ochieng was drawn to this work after losing four of his 19 siblings to HIV, and he wants young mothers to live healthier lives than his mother, who died when he was 16. His current focus is on how global health programs can succeed with limited resources in a challenging political climate. Ochieng is a 2019 New Voices Fellow at the Aspen Institute.
